Description
The church annexed to the Capuchin convent in Pietrelcina is closely linked to Padre Pio, even though he was never there, as its construction began ten years after he left the town. However, it was he who wanted it to be dedicated to the Holy Family and who symbolically indicated the place where it now stands. Witnesses report that during an evening walk, the young friar said he had heard “a choir of angels and bells ringing in celebration” at that very spot.
The convent was built thanks to the initiative of some residents of Pietrelcina and the financial support of Maria Pyle, an American and spiritual daughter of Padre Pio. The church houses the only relic of Saint Pio outside of San Giovanni Rotondo and also contains the tomb of Brother Modestino Fucci, a fellow friar of Padre Pio, for whom the process of beatification is currently underway.
