Description
In "I Embrace You", the figure of Padre Pio is overshadowed by a crucifix from which the wounds pour forth a stream of blood. This stream becomes a river that flows into the friar’s stigmata and, through a warm embrace, nourishes the Earth—with North America prominently depicted in the foreground.
Padre Pio, embracing the Cross and the suffering of Jesus, invites us to welcome those who suffer, without distinction. It is a powerful call to active charity, urging every passerby to experience and live out mercy. The reference to North America is a tribute to Padre Pio’s father’s emigration: Grazio emigrated to the United States to ensure his son received a proper education and could join the Capuchin Order.
An identical replica of the statue is located at St. Mary Church – Holy Spirit Parish in the city of New Castle, Pennsylvania, the place where Grazio Forgione likely worked as a farm laborer.
Timothy Schmalz is a Canadian sculptor renowned worldwide for his works that visually interpret the Gospels and address contemporary social issues. One of his most famous pieces, "Angels Unawares", has been on display in St. Peter’s Square since 2019.
