Description
The name Porta Madonnella comes from a small ceramic shrine built into the left side of the gate, depicting Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Anthony of Padua, and in the center, the Crowned Madonna.
It was here that Padre Pio, ahead of his time, conceived the idea of prayer groups: in the month of May and during the feasts of the three depicted saints, he would gather the residents of the Rione Castello to pray the Holy Rosary.
How to reach it
It can be reached starting from the small square in front of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, continuing along Via Prof. Masone. Along the way, you’ll come to a fork: to the left is Via Pantaniello, and to the right is Porta Madonnella. Facing east, Porta Madonnella was once the main entrance to the castle, while the exit was Porta Giardino, located to the west.
