The Torretta is located a short distance from Padre Pio’s birthplace, on Vico Storto Valle. A steep and winding stone staircase leads to the building’s only room, which served as Padre Pio’s residence from 1909 to 1912. It was here that the young friar wrote the first letters of his epistolary, an essential source for understanding the extraordinary events that took place in his life in Pietrelcina—especially during the year of his priestly ordination.

As time went on, Padre Pio’s health no longer allowed him to climb up to the Torretta, so he moved to the nearby and more comfortable house of his brother Michele.
