To the left of the pathway leading to the Chapel of the Stigmata stands a stone well dating back to the time when Padre Pio was still a child. It was built by Grazio, who had initially chosen a different spot to dig for water. After digging down three meters without success, he lost his temper in frustration.

At that moment, little Francesco asked his father not to be angry and pointed out the exact spot where he would find water. Still upset, Grazio followed his son’s directions—though not without a warning: if he didn’t find water there, Francesco would be the one ending up in the well!
